Abstract

A component for a vehicle interior configured to facilitate deployment of an airbag is disclosed. The component comprises a structural substrate comprising a fiber panel comprising a base area and weakened area; the weakened area comprises a recess comprising a profile configured to direct the formation of an opening for deployment of the airbag door; the body of fibers of the fiber panel comprises a generally aligned/laterally aligned arrangement of fibers at/across the weakened area. The generally aligned arrangement of fibers across the weakened area is configured to enhance structural rigidity for the composite structure at the weakened area. The structural substrate of the composite structure is formed by compression forming of the fiber panel; the generally laterally aligned arrangement of fibers across the weakened area is maintained during compression forming of the fiber panel into the structural substrate. The profile may comprise a variable shape/form (e.g. depth, width, etc.).
