Abstract
A catheter clip-on device applies surface acoustic waves to a catheter for preventing biofilms on the catheter surfaces. Multiple frequencies are generated by at least two PZT elements, coupled to a catheter or in-dwelling device. The relative motion of bacteria results in bacteria quorum sensing, and disrupts the bacteria attachment process.
Claims67
A device on a catheter positioned at least partially within a patient's body, the device comprising:
- an actuator comprising a first and second piezo resonator element;
- wherein said actuator is coupled to said catheter at a location outside of said patient's body;
- and
- a driver electrically connected to said actuator;
- whereby said actuator generates surface acoustic waves of Rayleigh-Lamb or Love type, or both, of a particular frequency, on said catheter and transmits surface acoustic waves around the catheter surface;
- whereby the surface acoustic waves mechanically create relative oscillation velocity of bacteria in relation to the catheter surface to thereby prevent bacterial attachment to said catheter.
A device on a catheter positioned at least partially within a patient's body, the device comprising:
- a first actuator comprising a first piezo resonator element and a second actuator comprising a second piezo resonator element;
- wherein said first actuator and said second actuator are coupled to a catheter at a location outside of said patient's body;
- and
- a driver electrically connected to said first actuator and said second actuator;
- whereby said first actuator and said second actuator generate surface acoustic waves of Rayleigh—Lamb or Love type, or both, on said catheter and transmit surface acoustic waves around the catheter surface;
- whereby the surface acoustic waves mechanically create relative oscillation velocity of bacteria in relation to the catheter surface to thereby prevent bacterial attachment to said catheter.
An actuator for prevention of RBC aggregation, by creating surface acoustic energy wherein surface acoustic waves are activated with from about 0.05 to about 0.2 mW/cm2 to effectively prevent E. coli-induced RBC aggregation;
- whereby these surface acoustic waves mechanically create relative oscillation velocity of bacteria in relation to RBC, and thereby prevent bacterial aggregation.
