An automated system for assisting a medical professional with performing a medical procedure within a patient’s body, such as an endoscopic procedure which does not provide direct visualization of the patient’s anatomy. The automated system is trained to track and/or predict points, lines, regions, etc., along the patient’s anatomy, even as the contour of the anatomy changes as a result of the medical procedure. The automated system may be advantageously used to perform procedures, such as Endoscopic Sleeve Gastroplasty procedures, to address challenges presented by the anatomy. The automated system may assist in suture placement, and/or maintaining orientation with respect to the anatomy, and/or providing guidance in performing the procedure by predicting actions to be taken during the procedure (e.g., recommending suture placement), and/or providing notifications of unintended and/or undesired configurations of the anatomy or structures positioned with respect to the anatomy.
