Abstract
An implant for use together with a hardening material in the context of orthopedic applications and associated methods of implanting an implant in a hardening material.
Claims26
A kit of parts for implanting an implant into a hard tissue, the kit of parts comprising:
- a hardening material for orthopedic use, and
- an implant having thermoplastic properties.
A method for implanting an implant into a hard tissue, the method comprising:
- (a1) providing a hard tissue with a recess that is at least partially filled with a hardened hardening material for orthopedic use, wherein the hardened hardening material comprises a recess, and inserting an implant having thermoplastic properties into the recess in the hardened hardening material while or followed by transmitting ultrasound to the implant for a time sufficient to liquify the implant to an extent that liquification results in fixation of the implant in the recess in the hardening material
- or
- (a2) providing a hard tissue with a recess that is at least partially filled with a non-hardened, partially hardened or hardened hardening material for orthopedic use, followed by creating a recess into the hardened hardening material and inserting an implant having thermoplastic properties into the recess in the hardened hardening material while or followed by transmitting ultrasound to the implant for a time sufficient to liquify the implant to the extent that liquification results in fixation of the implant in the recess in the hardening material, or followed by inserting an implant having thermoplastic properties into the non-hardened or partially hardened hardening material while or followed by transmitting ultrasound to the implant for a time sufficient to liquify the implant to the extent that liquification results in fixation of the implant in the hardening material and hardening the hardening material,
- or
- (a3) providing a hard tissue with a recess that is at least partially filled with a non-hardened or partially hardened hardening material for orthopedic use, followed by providing a device having a body defining an inner volume and comprising at least one aperture, inserting the device into the hardening material, and inserting an implant having thermoplastic properties through an opening of the device into the inner volume of the device while or followed by transmitting ultrasound to the implant to liquify the implant to the extent that a liquified at least partial volume of the implant extends out of the inner volume of the device through the at least one aperture, wherein the insertion of the device into the hardening material and the insertion of the implant into the device is carried out while the hardening material is non-hardened or partially hardened.

A method for implanting an implant into a hard tissue, wherein the method comprises:
- (a) providing the kit of parts,
- (b1) providing a hard tissue with a recess, or
- (b2) providing a hard tissue and creating a recess into the hard tissue,
- (c) filling the recess at least partially with the hardening material and creating a recess into the hardening material before or after hardening of the hardening material, wherein the recess in the hardening material has a proximal side facing outside of the hard tissue and a distal side facing interior of the hard tissue, and
- guiding the implant through the recess in the hardening material while or followed by transmitting ultrasound to the implant for a time sufficient to liquify the implant to the extent that liquification results in fixation of the implant in an area of the hard tissue adjacent to a distal end of the recess in the hardening material.
