Abstract

A tissue closure system includes an endoscope having first and second lumens therethrough, first and second control elements disposed within the first and second lumens, respectively, and a tissue engaging portion integral with a distal end of the endoscope. The tissue engaging portion includes a tissue acquisition assembly and a tissue closure assembly. The tissue acquisition assembly is controllable via the first control element, and the tissue closure assembly controllable via the second control element. The tissue engaging portion includes a tissue grasping portion for engaging first and second target tissue portions disposed adjacent an opening in target tissue. The tissue closure assembly is configured to pierce the target tissue, and to hold the first and second target tissue portions together to close the opening in the target tissue.

Dependent claims

A single-use endoscope with integrated tissue closure system, the single-use endoscope comprising:

a control handle at a proximal end of the endoscope and including a first actuator and a second actuator;
a flexible steerable shaft extending from the control handle with a proximal end coupled to the control handle, a distal end spaced away from the control handle, and a first lumen and a second lumen extending through the flexible steerable shaft between the proximal end and the distal end of the flexible steerable shaft;
a first control element disposed within the first lumen and having a proximal end coupled to and actuated by the first actuator;
a second control element disposed within the second lumen and having a proximal end coupled to and actuated by the second actuator;
a tissue acquisition assembly integral with and formed as a part of the distal end of the flexible steerable shaft and controllable via the first actuator and the first control element;
and
a tissue closure assembly integral with and formed as a part of the distal end of the flexible steerable shaft, and controllable via the second actuator and the second control element.

a handle having a proximal end and a distal end and including first and second actuators;
a flexible tube having an articulable steerable distal end, and a proximal end, the proximal end of the flexible tube directly coupled to the handle for control via the handle;
a tissue acquisition assembly integral to and formed as a part of the articulable steerable distal end of the flexible tube and controllable by the handle;
and
a tissue closure assembly integral to and formed as a part of the articulable steerable distal end of the flexible tube and controllable by the handle.
