Abstract
The present invention discloses a system, device, and method for receiving on-site dropped packages delivered to a structure. The system preferably comprises an off-the-shelf object-receiving unit easily installable in an opening in a building, such as a standard window opening. In embodiments, the unit includes a hingeably movable section that automatically opens when a parcel intended for it is near and closes itself after delivery. The parcel may then be retrieved via a door or window on the inside of the unit by a person in the room in which the unit is installed.

A package receiving unit for installation in an opening defined in a wall of a building structure, the opening having a width and bounded by opposing interior surfaces, the unit comprising:
- a body defining a receiving compartment, the body configured to be positioned at least partially within the opening;
- a movable closure connected to the body and configured to move between an open position permitting deposit of a package into the receiving compartment and a closed position;
- and
- at least one extendable adapter member coupled to the body, the adapter member configurable between a retracted state and an extended state and, in the extended state, configured to span at least a portion of the width of the opening between the body and one of the opposing interior surfaces of the opening so as to adapt the unit to openings of varying width.
A package receiving unit for installation in an opening of a building structure, the unit comprising:
- an outdoor section configured to extend outside the building structure when the unit is installed in the opening, the outdoor section comprising a movable wall having a lower end and an upper end, the movable wall configured to pivot between a closed position and an open position, and a non-movable platform having an inner end and an outer end, the outer end of the non-movable platform pivotably coupled to the lower end of the movable wall;
- and
- an indoor section configured to extend inside the building structure when the unit is installed in the opening, the indoor section in communication with the outdoor section to receive a package therefrom;
- wherein, when the movable wall is in the open position, an inner surface of the movable wall and a surface of the non-movable platform together define a substantially continuous package-receiving surface configured to support a package delivered by an unmanned aerial vehicle.
A package delivery system, comprising:
- a package receiving unit configured for installation in an opening of a building structure, the opening having a width, the package receiving unit comprising
- a body defining a receiving compartment,
- a movable closure connected to the body and movable between a closed position and an open position,
- at least one extendable adapter member configurable between a retracted state and an extended state and, in the extended state, configured to span at least a portion of the width of the opening to secure the receiving unit therein and to adapt the receiving unit to openings of varying width, and
- a first communications module;
- and
- an unmanned aerial vehicle configured to carry a package and comprising a second communications module configured to communicate with the first communications module of the receiving unit;
- wherein the receiving unit and the unmanned aerial vehicle are configured to coordinate, via communication between the first communications module and the second communications module, transition of the movable closure from the closed position to the open position as the unmanned aerial vehicle approaches the receiving unit for delivery of the package into the receiving compartment.
