Abstract
A metal-ceramic article and method for creating the same is disclosed in which the article has undergone machining to remove outer surface volume. The article is then treated to enhance the characteristics of at least the machined surface to be comparable to the original surface. The present invention features postformation of ceramic on the portions machined, while the ceramic portions of original surfaces retain their preformation attributes.
Claims15
A method for creating a metal ceramic article comprising:
- providing a metal-oxide workpiece having an outer layer, with an outer layer depth, of a substantially isotropic metal-ceramic to a waste depth of said workpiece;
- machining a target volume of said workpiece to shape said workpiece into a predetermined final article volume, composed of an original surface and a machined surface, having a substantially isotropic metal-ceramic surface;
- and
- emitting directed energy via a predefined, energization spot surface upon said machined surface for spot travel surface and a duration sufficient to impart a comparable hardness between said original surface and said machined surface to result in (i) a core consisting of a metal;
- (ii) an intermediate layer, enveloping said core, consisting of a mixture of said metal and a ceramic;
- and (iii) an outer layer, enveloping said intermediate layer, consisting of said ceramic,
- wherein said machined surface is less than said original surface, and
- wherein said spot travel surface is greater than 80% by area upon said machined surface relative to said original surface.

A metal ceramic article comprising:
- a core consisting of a metal;
- an intermediate layer, enveloping said core, consisting of a mixture of said metal and a ceramic;
- and postformed from a composition consisting of said metal by application of directed energy;
- and
- an outer layer, enveloping said intermediate layer, composed of an original surface consisting of a substantially isotropic metal-ceramic for a preformed original surface depth and a machined surface, of lessor surface area than said original surface, with a postformed machined surface depth consisting of said substantially isotropic metal-ceramic;
- said machined surface having a machined loss-volume depth removed from said outer layer;
- and said machined surface hardness-accelerated in duration sufficient to impart a comparable hardness between said original surface and said machined surface, wherein said intermediate area adjacent to said machined surface is a majority postformed, and said intermediate area adjacent to said original surface is a majority preformed.
