The present disclosure describes a system and method for enabling a device, such as a switch, a GPU, or other computing system or device, to reduce power consumption by reducing “toggling” of bit in a segment of data. As used herein, toggling refers to the switching between states (0 and 1) for any given bit between clock cycles. Such toggling requires significant power usage, especially as the transmission path length grows. To reduce such toggling, bits of data can be reordered to maintain the state of a given bit between clock cycles. The reordering can be performed based on a set of predefined reordering options that define a possible reordering. Once a reordering option is selected, it can be identified or associated with the reordered data so that a recipient can then reverse the reordering upon receipt of the data.
