Abstract
A liquid crystal (LC) device that includes a first electrode. The liquid crystal (LC) device may also include a second electrode. The liquid crystal (LC) device may further include a liquid crystal layer between the first electrode and the second electrode, the liquid crystal layer including liquid crystal molecules and an array of nanostructures adapted to cause a desired alignment of the liquid crystal molecules and to modulate light passing through the liquid crystal device. A periodicity of the array of nanostructures or an aspect ratio of each nanostructure of the array of nanostructures may be adapted to cause the desired alignment of the liquid crystal molecules.

A liquid crystal device comprising:
- a first electrode;
- a second electrode;
- and
- a liquid crystal layer between the first electrode and the second electrode, the liquid crystal layer comprising liquid crystal molecules and an array of nanostructures adapted to cause a desired alignment of the liquid crystal molecules and to modulate light passing through the liquid crystal device,
- wherein a periodicity of the array of nanostructures or an aspect ratio of each nanostructure of the array of nanostructures is adapted to cause the desired alignment of the liquid crystal molecules.
A method of forming a liquid crystal device, the method comprising:
- forming a first electrode;
- forming a second electrode;
- and
- forming a liquid crystal layer between the first electrode and the second electrode, the liquid crystal layer comprising liquid crystal molecules and an array of nanostructures adapted to cause a desired alignment of the liquid crystal molecules and to modulate light passing through the liquid crystal device,
- wherein a periodicity of the array of nanostructures or an aspect ratio of each nanostructure of the array of nanostructures is adapted to cause the desired alignment of the liquid crystal molecules.
