A firearm with geared barrel nut has a receiver defining an internally threaded barrel bore, a barrel assembly including a barrel having a length, the barrel assembly including a tubular barrel nut defining a bore receiving a portion of the barrel and having a forward edge, and the forward edge of the tubular barrel nut having an articulated shape configured to engage a toothed tool. The articulated shape of the tubular barrel nut may be a ring gear. The articulated shape of the tubular barrel nut may have forward-facing gear teeth. The barrel assembly may include a pilot facility proximate the forward edge of the tubular barrel nut and configured to interface with the toothed tool. The pilot facility may define an axis limiting rotation of the toothed tool and separation of the toothed tool from the tubular barrel nut.
