Abstract

A cryogenic cooling system comprises a circuit (302, 501, 601) configured to convey operating fluid to and from a first heat exchanger region (303) at which the circuit (302, 501, 601) has a thermal coupling to a working region (301). An inbound part (304, 502, 602) of said circuit (302, 501, 601) is before said first heat exchanger region (303) in the flowing direction of said operating fluid through the circuit (302, 501, 601). An outbound part (305, 503, 603) of said circuit (302, 501, 601) is after said first heat exchanger changer region (303) in the flowing direction of said operating fluid through the circuit (302, 501, 601). One or more active heat exchangers (401, 504, 505, 506) are coupled between said inbound part (304, 502, 602) and said outbound part (305, 503, 603) and configured to use input energy to transfer heat from the inbound part (304, 502, 602) to the outbound part (305, 503, 603) during operation.
