A powertrain is adapted to operate with an alternative fuel by modifying or replacing the high pressure fuel pump to provide a pathway to return fuel from the high pressure fuel pump to a pressure vessel. The fuel return pathway allows there to be a continuous flow that effectively cools the high pressure fuel pump and prevents vapor lock. The return flow pathway is arranged so that fuel flowing into the high pressure fuel pump must flow from a first side of a low pressure chamber to a second side of the low pressure chamber, wherein the first side and the second side are on opposite sides of the high pressure fuel pump. A flow regulator may control the return fuel flow. The flow regulator may include a check valve to sustain a continuous flow and a solenoid to provide a rapid flushing of the high pressure fuel pump.
