Abstract
An assembly includes a pair of crankshafts, a piston, and a plurality of connecting rods. The pair of crankshafts includes a first crankshaft and a second crankshaft. The first crankshaft is engaged with the second crankshaft such that rotation of the first crankshaft causes counterrotation of the second crankshaft. The plurality of connecting rods couple the pair of crankshafts to the piston such that rotation of the pair of crankshafts causes reciprocating motion of the piston. The plurality of connecting rods include at least one connecting rod coupling the first crankshaft to the piston and at least one connecting rod coupling the second crankshaft to the piston.

An assembly comprising:
- a first block at least partially defining a first bore;
- a second block at least partially defining a second bore;
- a housing positioned between the first block and the second block;
- a first piston capable of reciprocating within the first bore between first top dead center and first bottom dead center;
- a second piston capable of reciprocating within the second bore between second top dead center and second bottom dead center;
- a first crankshaft configured to rotate in a first direction within the housing;
- a second crankshaft configured to rotate in a second direction within the housing, the second direction opposite the first direction, the second crankshaft in mesh with the first crankshaft such that the second crankshaft counterrotates with rotation of the first crankshaft;
- a third crankshaft configured to rotate in the first direction with the housing;
- and
- a fourth crankshaft configured to rotate in the second direction the housing, the fourth crankshaft in mesh with the third crankshaft such that the fourth crankshaft counterrotates with rotation of the third crankshaft.
An assembly comprising:
- at least two pairs of crankshafts, each pair of crankshafts comprising a first crankshaft and a second crankshaft, wherein, for each pair of crankshafts, the first crankshaft is engaged with the second crankshaft such that rotation of the first crankshaft causes counterrotation of the second crankshaft;
- at least one piston associated with each pair of crankshafts;
- and
- for each pair of crankshafts, a plurality of connecting rods coupling the pair of crankshafts to the associated piston such that rotation of the pair of crankshafts causes reciprocating motion of the associated piston, the plurality of connecting rods comprising at least one connecting rod coupling the first crankshaft of the pair of crankshafts to the associated piston and at least one connecting rod coupling the second crankshaft of the pair of crankshafts to the associated piston.
An assembly comprising:
- a first crankshaft configured to rotate in a first rotational direction;
- a second crankshaft configured to rotate in a second rotational direction, the second rotational direction opposite the first rotational direction, the second crankshaft in mesh with the first crankshaft such that the second crankshaft counterrotates with rotation of the first crankshaft;
- a third crankshaft configured to rotate in the first rotational direction;
- and
- a fourth crankshaft configured to rotate in the second rotational direction, the fourth crankshaft in mesh with the third crankshaft such that the fourth crankshaft counterrotates with rotation of the third crankshaft.
