Abstract
An assembly includes a pair of crankshafts, a piston, and a plurality of connecting rods. The pair of crankshafts includes a first crankshaft and a second crankshaft. The first crankshaft is engaged with the second crankshaft such that rotation of the first crankshaft causes counterrotation of the second crankshaft. The plurality of connecting rods couple the pair of crankshafts to the piston such that rotation of the pair of crankshafts causes reciprocating motion of the piston. The plurality of connecting rods include at least one connecting rod coupling the first crankshaft to the piston and at least one connecting rod coupling the second crankshaft to the piston.

An assembly comprising:
- a pair of crankshafts, the pair of crankshafts comprising a first crankshaft and a second crankshaft, wherein the first crankshaft is engaged with the second crankshaft such that rotation of the first crankshaft causes counterrotation of the second crankshaft;
- a piston;
- and
- a plurality of connecting rods coupling the pair of crankshafts to the piston such that rotation of the pair of crankshafts causes reciprocating motion of the piston, the plurality of connecting rods comprising at least one connecting rod coupling the first crankshaft to the piston and at least one connecting rod coupling the second crankshaft to the piston.
An assembly comprising:
- a block at least partially defining a bore;
- a housing coupled to the block;
- a piston capable of reciprocating within the bore between top dead center and bottom dead center;
- a first crankshaft configured to rotate in a first direction within the housing;
- a second crankshaft configured to rotate in a second direction within the housing, the second direction opposite the first direction, the second crankshaft in mesh with the first crankshaft such that the second crankshaft counterrotates with rotation of the first crankshaft;
- a first connecting rod having a first end rotatably coupled to the first crankshaft and a second end opposite the first end;
- a second connecting rod having a first end rotatably coupled to the second crankshaft and a second end opposite the first end;
- a third connecting rod extending between a first end and a second end, the third connecting rod rotatably coupled to the second end of the first connecting rod at a first location, the third connecting rod rotatably coupled the second end of the second connecting rod at a second location;
- and
- a wrist pin rotatably coupling the third connecting rod to the piston at a third location.
An assembly comprising:
- a pair of counter-rotating crankshafts comprising:
- a first crankshaft configured to rotate in a first direction;
- and
- a second crankshaft configured to rotate in a second direction opposite the first direction;
- a first piston coupled to and positioned on a first side of the pair of counter-rotating crankshafts;
- a second piston coupled to and positioned on a second side of the pair of counter-rotating crankshafts;
- and
- six connecting rods coupling the first piston and the second piston to the pair of counter-rotating crankshafts.
