Abstract
An embodiment uses a symmetrical elastomeric design with hydraulic pistons on either end (as opposed to a single piston on conventional BOPs) which allows for lower actuation forces, reduced friction, and reduced wear and tear. The lower actuation forces correspond to lower operating pressures which allows the body and housing to be smaller, leading to a smaller footprint.
Claims20
A method comprising:
- sealing a bore with a blow out preventor (BOP);
- and
- unsealing the bore with the BOP;
- wherein the BOP comprises:
- a first actuator including a central channel that traverses the first actuator;
- a second actuator including a central channel that traverses the second actuator;
- a resilient ring including a central channel that traverses the ring;
- and
- a body that includes a central channel, the ring, and the first and second actuators;
- wherein the channels of the body, the ring, and the first and second actuators align with each other;
- wherein the ring is between the first and second actuators and the ring includes:
- (a) an upper half of the ring and a lower half of the ring;
- (b) at least one upper slot in the upper half of the ring and at least one lower slot in the lower half of the ring;
- and (c) at least one bar;
- wherein the at least one bar and the at least one upper slot are keyed to each other;
- wherein the at least one bar and the at least one lower slot are keyed to each other.
