Abstract
Mesocosm Technology relates to an interconnected set of technologies intended to adapt dome technology to serve as large domed volumes optimized for human activity. Many of the improvements to dome technology disclosed herein address reducing the weight of dome structures, the greatest limitation on the size of domes. This is done primarily through the application of what is referred to herein as structures with “radial-strut” geometry. Radial-strut structures retain rigidity by replacing heavy traditional “perimetric” struts with radial struts and “perimetric” tension elements. In some circumstances, the tension of said perimetric tension elements may be adjusted for varying loads. Radial-strut structures will have numerous mechanical engineering applications, including architecture.
Claims21
A node-shared radial strut space structure array, comprising:
- a plurality of radial strut space structure elements, each radial strut space structure element including:
- a central node;
- a plurality of radial struts extending from the central node to respective perimetric nodes;
- and
- tension elements connecting adjacent perimetric nodes, wherein adjacent radial strut space structure elements are interconnected through shared perimetric nodes.
A hybrid radial strut space structure element, comprising:
- a central strut defining a central node, the central strut having a first end and a second end;
- a first strut non-parallel with the central strut and connected to the first end of the central strut and extending in a first direction;
- a second strut non-parallel with the central strut and connected to the second end of the central strut and extending in a second direction that is not parallel to the first direction with respect to an axis defined by the central strut;
- and
- tension elements connecting ends of the first strut to ends of the second strut.
