The invention relates to multi-ply embossed tissue products, and methods of manufacturing the same, that are laminated without the use of an adhesive. Rather than rely about an adhesive to laminate the plies to one another, the embossed tissue products comprise a non-adhesive aqueous composition, which is applied to one of the tissue plies prior to, or immediately after, the ply is embossed and thereby increases the basis weight of the tissue ply from about 1% to about 10%. The wetted tissue ply is at least partially dried by contacting the wetted tissue ply with a first heatable embossing roll, which forms a part of the embossing nip. Drying of the wetted web by the first heatable embossing roll causes the embossed tissue ply to have a basis weight that is less than that of the wetted tissue ply. After wetting and at least partially drying, the first tissue ply may be laminated to a second tissue ply by passing the two plies thought a second nip and joining them together without the use of an adhesive.
