Abstract
Provided herein are compositions, methods, systems associated with propagation and fermentation, and co-products of biochemical production processes, for example, a DCO co-product resulting from converting oil containing grains into bio chemicals via fermentation in the presence of endogenous esterase. The DCO resulting from the processes exhibits lower metal ion content relative to a DCO obtained in the absence of endogenous fermentation with an esterase such as a lipase. The DCO is useful as a feedstock for the production of renewable diesel.

A method of producing distillers corn oil (DCO), the method comprising:
- (a) providing a feedstock comprising starch from a genetically modified plant engineered to produce an esterase;
- and
- (b) fermenting the feedstock with an ethanologen to produce ethanol and DCO, wherein the DCO exhibits reduced metal ion content or reduced phosphorus content relative to a DCO produced under otherwise identical conditions from a feedstock not obtained from the genetically modified plant.
The method of claim 1, wherein the metal ion content in the DCO is less than about 10 ppm.
The method of claim 1, wherein the reduced metal ion content comprises a reduction in one or more cationic metals selected from the group consisting of Na+, K+, Mg2+, and Ca2+.
The method of claim 1, wherein the DCO has a free fatty acid (FFA) content of less than about 5% by weight.
The method of claim 1, wherein the DCO has a fatty acid ethyl ester (FAEE) content of greater than about 12% by weight.
The method of claim 1, wherein the fermenting is performed under conditions comprising:
- (i) anaerobic fermentation;
- (ii) a fermentation solids content of about 20% to about 50%;
- (iii) a pH of about 4.0 to about 5.0;
- and
- (iv) a temperature of about 30° C. to about 34° C.
The method of claim 1, further comprising isolating the DCO by:
- (i) separating an emulsion layer comprising corn oil from an aqueous layer of a fermentation residue;
- (ii) breaking the emulsion layer by adjusting the pH to about 6.0 to about 9.0 to provide a corn oil phase and a second aqueous phase;
- and
- (iii) separating the corn oil phase from the second aqueous phase to obtain the DCO.
A composition for ethanol production, the composition comprising:
- (a) water;
- (b) an ethanologen;
- and
- (c) ground plant material obtained from a genetically modified plant engineered to produce an esterase, wherein the genetically modified plant is selected from the group consisting of corn, soybean, cottonseed, sunflower seed, canola, rapeseed, and peanut.
A fermenter comprising water, an ethanologen, and ground feedstock obtained from a genetically modified plant engineered to produce an esterase, wherein the genetically modified plant is selected from the group consisting of corn, soybean, cottonseed, sunflower seed, canola, rapeseed, and peanut, the fermenter being configured for ethanol production under conditions comprising:
- (i) anaerobic fermentation;
- (ii) a fermentation solids content of at least about 20%;
- (iii) a pH of about 4.0 to about 5.0;
- and
- (iv) a temperature of about 25° C. to about 37° C.
