Abstract
Methods of making carbonate aggregates are provided. Aspects of the methods include preparing a carbonate slurry from a precipitation reaction mixture having predetermined conditions selected to produce an aggregate having desirable durability or friability and subjecting the resultant carbonate slurry to rotational action (optionally with an aggregate substrate) to produce a carbonate aggregate. Also provided are aggregate compositions produced by the methods, as well as compositions that include the carbonate coated aggregates, e.g., concretes, and uses thereof.
Claims22
A method of producing a durable synthetic aggregate, the method comprising:
- obtaining a carbonate slurry from a precipitation reaction mixture having a pH of less than 8;
- and
- subjecting the carbonate slurry to rotational action to produce a durable synthetic aggregate.
A method of producing a durable synthetic aggregate, the method comprising:
- obtaining a carbonate slurry from a precipitation reaction mixture produced under precipitation conditions that favor a single amorphous calcium phosphate crystallization event;
- and
- subjecting the carbonate slurry to rotational action to produce a durable synthetic aggregate.
