A method of processing drinking water treatment material is disclosed. The drinking water treatment material is produced as a byproduct of a water treatment softening processing typically employed by a water treatment facility. The byproduct drinking water treatment material is typically in the form of a sludge. The methods include receiving the DWTM sludge; lagoon storage of the sludge with foreign matter removal; dewatering by plate-and-frame filtration and/or lagoon pumping with crocks and ditching, amongst various other dewatering methods; conditioning various methods, such as by laydown, windrowing, and drying, for example; and screening to yield a sized fraction for agricultural or industrial use, including VRT field application. In certain embodiments, the dried drinking water treatment material or “filter cake” is then pelletized into generally uniform granules for further field application.
