Various implementations include a passive groundwater treatment barrier system. The system includes an in-situ hydraulic barrier wall constructed in a path of flow of a contaminated groundwater plume. At least one water-tight treatment vessel is positioned proximate to (and preferably upgradient of) the barrier wall, the treatment vessel containing a treatment media and configured for downflow of groundwater through the media. A groundwater infiltration and collection system is located upgradient of the barrier wall to convey contaminated groundwater to the treatment vessel. The system includes a hydraulic head control apparatus and a conveyance pipe passing through the barrier wall and connecting the treatment vessel to the hydraulic head control apparatus. A outlet which, in some implementations, includes a distribution system positioned downgradient of the barrier wall to disperse treated groundwater.
