The invention relates to a payload separation system utilizing a circular arch connective mechanism for connecting and releasing a payload from a launch vehicle. The system employs interleaved voussoirs arranged in circular arch configurations on opposing rings, compressed together by a compression band to form a monolithic rigid structure with superior load distribution characteristics. The system is useful for spacecraft separation mechanisms, rocket stage separation systems, and other vehicular separation applications including submarine torpedo release mechanisms, aircraft munitions release mechanisms, and antenna deployment systems. The system addresses the fundamental paradox of separation devices that must reliably hold during launch conditions while also reliably releasing upon command, providing testable, repeatable operation without the shock forces, debris generation, or concentrated load limitations of prior art separation systems.
