Abstract
Laser marked articles having a predetermined feature marked onto a wall that is either user readable, machine readable, or both. Also, methods of making the marked articles by laser marking.
Claims20
An article having a surface marked by a pulsed laser comprising a predetermined pattern of a plurality of locations, wherein each location comprises one of a marked location where a mark is formed in the surface by constant surface velocity (CV) bitmap marking or an unmarked location with a void in the surface such that the plurality of locations form a grid pattern:
- wherein the predetermined pattern comprises alphanumeric characters in the form of text, wherein the alphanumeric characters convey information related to a product housed by the article;
- wherein the grid pattern comprises the plurality of locations positioned in two or more adjacent rows arranged along a vertical direction, and two or more adjacent columns arranged along a horizontal direction, wherein the two or more rows are substantially parallel and two or more columns are substantially parallel, wherein each adjacent pair of locations of the plurality of locations along any of the two or more rows is separated by an X-distance such that they do not overlap along the horizontal direction and each adjacent pair of the two or more rows is separated by a Y-distance such that they do not overlap along the vertical direction;
- wherein the Y-distance is 1.2 to 4 times the X-distance, and wherein the alphanumeric characters have a font size of 6 pt to 16 pt;
- and,
- wherein an average % Mismarked of the alphanumeric characters is less than 20%, wherein the average % Mismarked is a percentage value of a ratio of a number of the plurality of locations that were improperly marked to a total number of the plurality of locations, and wherein the number of the plurality of locations that were improperly marked is a sum of a number of the marked locations where the mark was not formed and a number of the unmarked locations where the mark was formed.
- wherein the predetermined pattern comprises alphanumeric characters in the form of text, wherein the alphanumeric characters convey information related to a product housed by the article;
- wherein the grid pattern comprises the plurality of locations positioned in two or more adjacent rows arranged along a vertical direction, and two or more adjacent columns arranged along a horizontal direction, wherein the two or more rows are substantially parallel and two or more columns are substantially parallel, wherein each adjacent pair of locations of the plurality of locations along any of the two or more rows is separated by an X-distance such that they do not overlap along the horizontal direction and each adjacent pair of the two or more rows is separated by a Y-distance such that they do not overlap along the vertical direction;
- and,
- wherein an Average % Displacement for the predetermined pattern is between about 30% and about 60% when a galvo mirror velocity maximum is 1000 rad/sec as measured according to the Average % Displacement method.
