Abstract
Provided herein are apparatuses, systems and methods for non-invasively assessing synaptic dysfunction in a patient with Alzheimer's Disease. Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) is applied to at least one brain region of the patient. A plurality of TMS evoked potentials generated in response to the TMS applied to the at least one brain region of the patient is recorded with a plurality of electroencephalography (EEG) electrodes. At least one characteristic of the plurality of TMS evoked potentials is analyzed to assess synaptic dysfunction in the patient. An indication of the synaptic dysfunction assessment of the patient is output.

A method of assessing neurodegeneration in a patient using non-invasive stimulation, the method comprising:
- applying single-pulse transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) to a precuneus region in a brain of a patient, wherein consecutive pulses in the single-pulse TMS are separated by periods of non-stimulation having different lengths;
- sensing, using a set of electroencephalography (EEG) electrodes arranged on a scalp of the patient, a set of TMS-evoked potentials in response to applying the single-pulse TMS;
- determining an amount of neurodegeneration in the patient based on at least one characteristic of the set of TMS-evoked potentials;
- and
- outputting an indication of the amount of neurodegeneration.
A neurostimulation system, comprising:
- a transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) coil;
- a set of electroencephalography (EEG) electrodes configured to be arranged on a scalp of a patient;
- and
- a controller configured to:
- control the TMS coil to apply single-pulse TMS to a precuneus region in a brain of a patient, wherein consecutive pulses in the single-pulse TMS are separated by periods of non-stimulation having different lengths;
- sense, using the set of EEG electrodes, a set of TMS-evoked potentials in response to applying the single-pulse TMS;
- determine an amount of neurodegeneration in the patient based on at least one characteristic of the set of TMS-evoked potentials;
- and
- output an indication of the amount of neurodegeneration.
