Abstract
This disclosure relates to a surgical device configured to both strip and cut a tendon. The harvested tendon can be used in various orthopedic procedures, such as ACL, PCL, and UCL reconstructions.
Claims20
A method, comprising:
- advancing an insert and a shaft of a surgical device relative to a tendon such that a portion of the tendon enters the insert via a window of the insert, and such that another portion of the tendon exits the insert by extending through a cutout proximal of the window, wherein the insert is adjacent a distal end of the shaft, wherein the insert provides a stripping tube, wherein the insert is formed as a separate structure from the shaft, wherein a through bore of the stripping tube is coaxial with a through bore of the insert, and wherein the shaft projects distally from a handle of the surgical device;
- and
- advancing a cutter of the surgical device distally relative to the insert and the shaft by applying a force to a cap connected to the cutter, wherein the cap is connected to the cutter so as to permit relative rotation between the cap and the cutter about a central axis of the cutter, wherein advancing the cutter severs the tendon by pinching the tendon between a distal edge of the cutter and a proximal edge of the stripping tube, wherein the cap is proximal to the handle.
A method, comprising:
- advancing an insert and a shaft of a surgical device relative to a tendon such that a portion of the tendon enters the insert via a window of the insert, and such that another portion of the tendon exits the insert by extending through a cutout proximal of the window, wherein the insert is adjacent a distal end of the shaft, wherein the insert provides a stripping tube, wherein the insert is formed as a separate structure from the shaft, wherein at least a portion of the insert is received within the shaft such that an exterior surface of the insert is configured to interface with an inner surface of the shaft, and wherein the shaft projects distally from a handle of the surgical device;
- and
- advancing a cutter of the surgical device distally relative to the insert and the shaft by applying a force to a cap connected to the cutter, wherein advancing the cutter severs the tendon by pinching the tendon between a distal edge of the cutter and a proximal edge of the stripping tube, wherein the cap and the cutter have a common central axis, wherein the cap is proximal to the handle.
A surgical device, comprising:
- a handle;
- a shaft projecting distally from the handle;
- an insert adjacent a distal end of the shaft, wherein the insert is formed as a separate structure from the shaft, wherein the insert provides a stripping tube, wherein the stripping tube includes a window permitting a portion of a tendon to enter the insert, wherein the insert includes a cutout proximal of the window and configured such that the portion of the tendon exits the insert by extending through the cutout;
- a cutter moveable distally to sever the tendon such that the portion of the tendon extending through the cutout is separated from a remainder of the tendon by pinching the tendon between a distal edge of the cutter and a proximal edge of the stripping tube, wherein the cutter is provided by a rod connected to a guide, wherein the surgical device includes a projection and a helical slot configured to interact such that axial movement of the rod and the guide along a central axis results in rotation of the rod and the guide about the central axis;
- and
- a cap attached to the guide so as to restrict axial movement of the cap relative to the guide and to permit rotation of the cap relative to the guide about the central axis.
