Abstract
Aspects of this disclosure relate to formulations and methods designed to provide both carbohydrates as a fuel source and hydration during exercise. In general, a disclosed formulation consists of a mixture of simple sugars, electrolytes, and an osmolality within an optimal range. The methods described may enable a formulation that supports a sustained, slow release of at least one or more glucose-specific source. This occurs through rapid hydrolysis upon entering the stomach, followed by continued hydrolysis within the stomach, ensuring a steady and continuous supply of fuel.
Claims30
A hydration composition, comprising:
- at least one or more glucose-specific source comprising free glucose, sucrose, and a polymeric dextrin in an amount effective to yield a working osmolality of about 200 to about 300 mOsm/kg;
- and
- at least one electrolyte,
- wherein the hydration composition is formulated as a liquid, a powder, a gel, or a concentrate,
- wherein the polymeric dextrin is provided at an amount sufficient to provide a sustained release of energy while maintaining the working osmolality level that promotes optimal hydration,
- wherein the polymeric dextrin is a carbohydrate comprising a plurality of monosaccharide units which can be linear, branched, or cyclic, and
- wherein the polymeric dextrin is selected from the group consisting of a resistant dextrin, an indigestible dextrin, tapioca dextrin, corn dextrin, wheat dextrin, potato dextrin, rice dextrin, polymeric dextrins comprising cyclic monosaccharide units, and modifications or derivatives thereof,
- wherein the hydration composition has a total carbohydrate content in the range of about 6% to about 8% (w/v).
