Packet format adjustment technologies

An apparatus for use in association with providing communication with processing units in a scale-up cluster of processing units, the apparatus comprising:

• an Ethernet PHY;
• a Media Access Control (MAC);
• and
• circuitry to:
• select, from multiple packet formats, a packet format based on data associated with egress of a packet to a destination, the multiple packet formats comprising (1) an Ethernet format comprising a 48-bit source address and a 48-bit destination address and (2) at least one custom packet format, the at least one custom packet format having a reduced packet length relative to the standard Ethernet format, and comprising an Ethernet Frame Check Sequence (FCS), a reliable header comprising a packet sequence number, a 16-bit destination address, and a 16-bit source address;
• store data for a packet in the selected packet format;
• and
• cause the packet to be transmitted via the MAC and Ethernet PHY.

At least one machine-readable storage medium storing instructions that when executed by a machine cause the machine to:

• select, from multiple packet formats, a packet format based on data associated with egress of a packet to a destination, the multiple packet formats comprising (1) an Ethernet format comprising a 48-bit source address and a 48-bit destination address and (2) at least one custom packet format, the at least one custom packet format having a reduced packet length relative to the Ethernet format, and comprising an Ethernet Frame Check Sequence (FCS), a reliable header comprising a packet sequence number, a 16-bit destination address, and a 16-bit source address;
• store data for a packet in the selected packet format;
• and
• cause the packet to be transmitted via a MAC and Ethernet PHY.

A method, comprising:

• selecting, from multiple packet formats, a packet format based on data associated with egress of a packet to a destination, the multiple packet formats comprising (1) an Ethernet format comprising a 48-bit source address and a 48-bit destination address and (2) at least one custom packet format, the at least one custom packet format having a reduced packet length relative to the standard Ethernet format, and comprising an Ethernet Frame Check Sequence (FCS), a reliable header comprising a packet sequence number, a 16-bit destination address, and a 16-bit source address;
• storing data for a packet in the selected packet format;
• and
• causing the packet to be transmitted via a MAC and Ethernet PHY.
