A continuous process for preparing an electrolyte solution having reduced impurity levels is described. The process comprises at least electrochemically reducing an impurity, the impurity being present at an initial concentration, contained within an initial electrolyte solution also comprising a redox active electrolyte. The electrochemically reducing conditions are sufficient to generate an electrochemically treated electrolyte solution containing a reduced form of the redox active electrolyte and a reduced form of the impurity. The reduced form of the impurity is separated from the electrochemically treated solution, so as to provide a final electrolyte solution having a final concentration of the impurity that is less than the initial concentration of the impurity. In some embodiments, the process further comprises the step of oxidizing the purified electrolyte solution.
