A computer-implemented method for gesture recognition in virtual and augmented reality environments includes receiving first and second signals associated with gesture-inputs of a user at different times, where the signals are based on data generated by sensors of a VR headset or AR glasses. Using at least one processor, a user intent is identified based on the signals and temporal information relating to the different times, where the user intent is based on a gesture identifier associated with the gesture-inputs. A third signal is generated based on the user intent, and a task is performed on the VR headset or AR glasses based on the third signal. The gesture-inputs may include eye movements, hand motions, finger movements such as pinch gestures, or combinations thereof, detected by cameras or other sensors on the VR/AR device. The method enables improved gesture recognition by considering temporal relationships between multiple gesture inputs.
