An adaptive query execution system for columnar databases is configured to dynamically select a materialization approach during query processing. A request to perform a query is received, and a filter column and non-filter column are identified. A first set of contiguous rows of the filter column is accessed from object storage and filtered to generate filter results. The filter results are analyzed to derive performance characteristics, such as run-time or data reduction ratio. Based on the analysis, a likelihood value is generated indicating a potential performance benefit from applying a lazy materialization technique to a subsequent task involving another set of contiguous rows. The likelihood value is compared to a threshold, and, when the threshold is met, the lazy materialization technique is applied to the subsequent task. This adaptive approach enables efficient query execution by optimizing data retrieval based on empirical filter performance.
