A reconfigurable processor includes a configurable unit having a configuration data store organized as a shift register. The shift register includes individually addressable argument registers that form non-overlapping portions of the shift register. The configurable unit supports two access modes for the argument registers. In a first access mode, configuration data is loaded into the configuration data store by sequentially shifting sub-files of configuration data into the shift register, writing through all registers including the argument registers. In a second access mode, new argument values are written directly into one or more individually addressable argument registers without shifting through the shift register, leaving data stored in all other portions of the shift register unchanged. A fast argument load controller distributes argument data to configurable units using address-tagged value tuples routed over a vector network, enabling efficient runtime modification of execution parameters.
