Abstract
A storage system dynamically manages redundancy by monitoring real-time failure data of its storage devices. The system determines a failure rate based on collected operational data and calculates a corresponding current durability level using an existing erasure coding configuration. It then compares the current durability level to a predefined minimum durability threshold associated with the system. If the current durability level fails to meet the minimum requirement, the system modifies the erasure coding configuration by adjusting the number of data and/or parity chunks to restore compliance. Data is then encoded or re-encoded using the updated configuration to maintain the required durability.
Claims1
A computer-implemented method for managing storage systems, comprising:
- determining a failure rate of a storage device in the storage system based on data collected during operation of the storage device;
- determining a current durability level of the storage system based on the determined failure rate and a current erasure coding configuration of the storage system;
- comparing the current durability level with a minimum durability level associated with the storage system;
- based on the comparison, modifying the erasure coding configuration by changing a number of data chunks and/or parity chunks used to store data in the storage system to satisfy the minimum durability level;
- re-encoding data in the storage system using the modified erasure coding configuration.
