Abstract
A privacy device includes a shutter moveably mounted along a first axis to a frame supporting a camera having a lens. A closing solenoid is supported by the frame and including a closing core. Control circuitry is coupled to the closing solenoid to cause the shutter to cover the lens. An opening solenoid that includes an opening core may be used to move the shutter to an open position to uncover the lens.

A privacy device comprising:
- a shutter moveably mounted along a first axis to a frame supporting a camera having a lens;
- a solenoid supported by the frame and including a core;
- control circuitry coupled to the solenoid to cause the shutter to cover the lens;
- and
- a flexible lever supported on a first end by the frame, the flexible lever having a protrusion on a second end biased into a recess in the shutter, the protrusion including a ramp portion and an engagement surface configured to mate with a shutter engagement surface, the engagement surface and the shutter engagement surface being substantially flat and parallel to each other and generally orthogonal to a direction of movement of the shutter along the first axis.

A method comprising:
- detecting, by a computing device having a camera with a lens and a shutter moveable along a first axis to cover the lens, a triggering event comprising at least one of:
- an ending of a video conference call, a detection of an undesired object in an image captured by the camera, an unexpected movement of the computing device, or a low bandwidth condition;
- generating, in response to the triggering event, a solenoid driving current;
- and
- providing the driving current to a closing solenoid to cause the shutter to move along the first axis to cover the lens of the camera.

- a closing solenoid supported by the frame and including a closing moveable core;
- an opening solenoid supported by the frame and including an opening moveable core;
- a shaft coupling the closing moveable core and the opening moveable core to the shutter such that actuation of the closing solenoid moves the shutter to a closed position covering the lens and actuation of the opening solenoid moves the shutter to an open position uncovering the lens;

- control circuitry configured to receive a close shutter signal and an open shutter signal and to selectively actuate the closing solenoid and the opening solenoid respectively.
