A liner hanger, packer, or other joint is connected to and near the top of a liner being deployed. One side of a clutch is formed on the liner hanger, packer, or other joint by fingers that protrude inwardly from and are preferably integral to a shroud. The other side of the clutch is formed on a running tool. The shroud can provide support to the fingers and limit their bending in the inward direction in cases where they are accidentally impacted. The shroud can also shield the base casing from the flow of fracking fluid and limit its erosion. The surfaces delimiting the top of the fingers and the bottom of the spaces between the fingers can be oriented so as to smoothly direct fluid flow toward the inner bore of the liner without generating significant turbulence.
