Abstract
A method of reinforcing an existing structure includes arranging a structural overlay over part of an existing structure to define a cavity between the structural overlay and the existing structure, and securing the structural overlay to the existing structure using a structural adhesive. The structural adhesive may form a seal between an edge portion of the structural overlay and the existing structure. A core material is injected into the cavity, and the core material is allowed to cure to form a solid core between the existing structure and the structural overlay. The core bonds to the existing structure and the structural overlay with sufficient strength to transmit shear forces therebetween.
Claims18
A method of reinforcing an existing structure, the method comprising:
- arranging a structural overlay over part of an existing structure to define a cavity between the structural overlay and the existing structure;
- securing the structural overlay to the existing structure using a structural adhesive, the structural adhesive forming a seal between an edge portion of the structural overlay and the existing structure;
- injecting a core material into the cavity;
- and
- allowing the core material to cure to form a solid core between the existing structure and the structural overlay,
- wherein the core bonds to the existing structure and the structural overlay with sufficient strength to transmit shear forces therebetween.
A reinforced structure comprising:
- an existing structure;
- a structural overlay arranged over part of the existing structure to define a cavity between the structural overlay and the existing structure;
- and
- a core between the existing structure and the structural overlay,
- wherein the structural overlay is secured to the existing structure using a structural adhesive, the structural adhesive forming a seal between an edge portion of the structural overlay and the existing structure,
- and the core is bonded to the existing structure and the structural overlay with sufficient strength to transmit shear forces therebetween.
