Liquid crystal composition and light modulating device thereof

Abstract

A liquid crystal composition includes at least one liquid crystal compound of a general formula (I), at least one elastic constant regulator of a general formula (II), and at least one chiral compound. A light modulating device with the liquid crustal composition has at least two stable states in the absence of applied voltage, at least one state allowing incident light to pass through substantially (transparent state), and at least one state scattering incident light substantially (foggy state). The transparent state and the foggy state may be switched by means of an external electric field. The transparent state is clear and highly transmissive, while the foggy state provides privacy protection. By introducing a bimesogenic compound and adjusting the helical pitch of the liquid crystal composition system to P≤3.5 μm, the uniformity of the planar arrangement of the liquid crystal composition molecules is improved and texture defects are reduced.
