Abstract
An electrical component having a coating for improved flammability performance for use with multiple surfaces, including metal and polymeric surfaces is provided for herein. The coating comprises a carrier, primary additives and secondary additive and provides for enhanced performance of the electrical components by eliminating or delaying the start of a flame event or in the case of a flame event, decreasing the flame height. The electrical component can be an electrical connector.
Claims20
An electrical component having improved flammability performance, said electrical component being coated with a formulation comprising a carrier, primary additives and secondary additives.
An electrical component having an improved flammability performance coating,
- wherein such improved flammability performance coating consists essentially of:
- a carrier, wherein the carrier is chosen from the group consisting of epoxies, polyurethanes, acrylics, and mixtures thereof;
- primary additives, wherein the primary additives are thermally conductive and electrically insulative additives and solid-state foaming agents,
- wherein said thermally conductive and electrically insulative additives are chosen from the group consisting of boron nitride, aluminum oxide and mixtures thereof and said thermally conductive and electrically insulative additives ranges from about 1 to about 5% (nominal % of the coating composition);
- and
- wherein said solid-state foaming agents are thermoplastic microspheres and said solid state foaming agents comprises about 5 to about 10%(nominal %) of the coating composition;
- and
- secondary additives chosen from the group consisting of secondary flame retardants, synergists, char agents and mixtures thereof, wherein said secondary additive is in the range of about 5 to about 10 % (nominal %) of the coating composition.
A connector having an improved flammability performance coating, wherein such
- improved flammability performance coating consists essentially of:
- a carrier, wherein the carrier is chosen from the group consisting of epoxies, polyurethanes, acrylics, and mixtures thereof;
- primary additives, wherein the primary additives are thermally conductive and electrically insulative additives and solid-state foaming agents,
- wherein said thermally conductive and electrically insulative additives are chosen from the group consisting of boron nitride, aluminum oxide and mixtures thereof and said thermally conductive and electrically insulative additives ranges from about 1 to about 5% (nominal % of the coating composition);
- and
- wherein said solid-state foaming agents are thermoplastic microspheres and said solid state foaming agents comprises about 5 to about 10%(nominal %) of the coating composition;
- and
- secondary additives chosen from the group consisting of secondary flame retardants, synergists, char agents and mixtures thereof, wherein said secondary additive is in the range of about 5 to about 10 % (nominal %) of the coating composition.
