Abstract
Particles with suitable properties may be generated. The particles may include carbon particles. The particles may be used as conductive additives and/or fillers. The particles may be used in energy storage devices such as, for example, lithium-ion batteries.
Claims21
A method of making a carbon particle, comprising:
- (a) generating a plasma;
- (b) heating a thermal transfer gas, wherein the heating comprises use of the plasma;
- and
- (c) introducing, to the thermal transfer gas, a hydrocarbon, thereby forming the carbon particle, wherein the carbon particle has
- (i) a lattice constant (Lc) greater than about 3.0 nanometers (nm),
- (ii) a statistical thickness surface area/nitrogen surface area (STSA/N2SA) ratio in a range of about 1.01 to 1.4, and
- (iii) a total content of extractable polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH content) of less than about 1 part per million (ppm) or a transmittance of toluene extract (TOTE) greater than about 99.8%;
- wherein the forming in (c) occurs in a substantially oxygen-free atmosphere.
