Abstract
Disclosed herein are latex modified asphalt emulsion compositions with cationic emulsifiers. The present disclosure also relates to methods of making the disclosed compositions. The compositions disclosed herein can be used in a variety of applications including, but not limited to, asphalt compositions, paints, coatings, carpet compositions, paper binding and coating compositions, tack coats, foams, or adhesives.

-33. (canceled)
An asphalt emulsion composition comprising:
- (i) asphalt;
- (ii) a non-carboxylated latex comprising 0.01 to 20 wt. % of a cationic emulsifier based on the total weight of the latex;
- and
- (iv) optionally water.
A method of forming an asphalt emulsion composition comprising:
- polymerizing monomers to form a non-carboxylated latex;
- reacting a fatty amine derivative of Formula II with an acid to form a cationic emulsifier
- wherein R is independently a substituted or unsubstituted alkyl, aryl, alkenyl, oxyalkylene, or polyoxyalkylene and a and b are independently an integer from 1 to 20;
- post-adding the cationic emulsifier to the non-carboxylated latex;
- and
- contacting the latex, asphalt, and optionally water to form an asphalt emulsion.
The method of claim 58, wherein the monomers selected from the group consisting of styrene, butadiene, and acrylate monomers.
The method of claim 58, wherein the acid is selected from the group consisting of HCl, HBr, HI, HClO4, HClO3, HNO3, H3PO4, H2SO4, tartaric acid, citric acid, acetic acid, adipic acid, oxalic acid, and boric acid.
The method of claim 58, wherein the non-carboxylated latex, asphalt, and optional cationic emulsifier are co-milled in a colloid mill to form a cationic asphalt emulsion.
The method of claim 58, wherein the non-carboxylated latex is post-added to the asphalt emulsion.
The method of claim 58, wherein the non-carboxylated latex is post-added to the cationic asphalt emulsion.
The method of claim 58, wherein the monomers are cold-polymerized at a temperature of from −5° C. to 40° C. to form the latex.
The method of claim 58, wherein the monomers are hot-polymerized at a temperature of 40 to 100° C. from to form the latex.
