A security element displays an alternating image to a viewer with at least two different views. The first view shows one motif, and the second view shows another, which appear in the same or overlapping zones. Each motif has a foreground region that appears bright and a surrounding background region that appears dark. Under directed illumination, tilting the security element about a first axis causes the first motif to appear only within a specific viewing angle range, and the second motif only within a different, non-overlapping range. The sheet-like pattern can be tilted about a second axis by at least 5°, without the first or second views disappearing or changing significantly. The bright foreground regions are ray-optically acting relief structures, specifically micromirror structures; the dark background regions are relief structures that absorb incident light and/or reflect it away from the intended viewing angles for the two views.
A security element for security papers or value documents that presents to a viewer an alternating image with at least two different views, with the first view showing a first motif and the second view showing a second motif, which appear in the same or at least overlapping zones, wherein
