A laser plotter and a method for detecting a replaceable worktable or table type of a laser plotter for cutting, engraving, marking, and/or labeling a workpiece are disclosed. At least one radiation source in the form of a laser is used within a housing of the laser plotter. When the radiation source is activated, a laser beam is directed via deflection elements to a focusing unit or laser head. A worktable or processing area is captured by at least one camera. The camera captures at least one image of the worktable and transmits it to a table analysis software. The table analysis software then evaluates one or more defined evaluation positions of the captured image of the worktable by comparing features of the worktable with stored features of possible worktables, or by reading out identification types.
