Methods, system, and computer-readable storage media for identifier-based application control are disclosed. A method may be implemented by a peripheral device, and include steps such as receiving an identifier from a hardware element that stores the identifier and that is communicatively coupled with the peripheral device, providing an indication of the identifier to a user device that is communicatively coupled with the peripheral device and that presents a first output of execution of a video game, wherein providing the indication of the identifier causes the execution of the video game to perform one or more operations based on the indication, receiving, from the user device, a second output of the execution of the video game corresponding to the first output, and presenting the second output.
