A personal respiratory protection device includes a housing to be worn by a user. An airflow path extends through the housing from an air inlet to an air outlet. An ultraviolet irradiation assembly is in the airflow path and includes an array of ultraviolet emitters. A first ultraviolet-transmissive substrate is positioned close to the ultraviolet emitters. A diffuse reflective coating is on the first ultraviolet-transmissive substrate and defines apertures aligned with the ultraviolet emitters. A second diffuse reflective surface is spaced from the first ultraviolet-transmissive substrate to define a reflective irradiation cavity. A fan moves air through the reflective irradiation cavity and a control system is coupled to the ultraviolet light emitters and the fan. Air passing through the cavity is exposed to multiple diffuse reflections of ultraviolet radiation to produce an increased and spatially uniform photon density prior to delivery of treated air to the user.
