Abstract
The present disclosure relates generally to the field of medical devices and methods to assist in the introduction of an instrument into a patient, and more particularly to medical devices for measuring and/or monitoring forces applied during introduction of an access sheath through a body lumen.
Claims20
A medical device monitoring forces applied by said medical device within a patient's body, said medical device comprising:
- an access sheath defining a lumen therethrough;
- a medical tool disposed within the lumen of the access sheath, the medical tool having a distal end tapered to facilitate atraumatic advancement through a body passage;
- and
- a force gauge disposed on a proximal portion of the access sheath and having a plurality of indicators on an outer surface thereof positioned to correlate to and to indicate an amount of resistive force exerted on the access sheath and/or the medical tool upon the access sheath and/or the medical tool contacting, without passing through, an obstruction within the body passage.

A medical device monitoring forces applied by said medical device within a patient's body, said medical device comprising:
- an access sheath defining a lumen therethrough;
- a medical tool disposed within the lumen of the access sheath, the medical tool having a distal end tapered to facilitate atraumatic advancement through a body passage;
- and
- a force gauge disposed on a proximal portion of the access sheath, and having a spring therein and a plurality of indicators on an outer surface thereof correlating movement of the access sheath and/or the medical tool relative to a restoring force of the spring of the force gauge upon the access sheath and/or the medical tool contacting, without passing through, an obstruction within the body passage.

A force measurement system for medical procedures, comprising:
- a force gauge including:
- a shaft having a proximal end, a distal end, a lumen extending between the proximal end and the distal end, a distal portion having a first outer dimension, and a proximal portion having a second outer dimension less than the first outer dimension to define a spring abutment surface between the proximal portion and the distal portion;
- a spring disposed about the proximal portion of the shaft, wherein a distal end of the spring contacts the spring abutment surface;
- and
- a grip slidably disposed over at least a portion of the shaft, wherein a proximal end of the grip includes a spring abutment surface configured to contact a proximal end of the spring;
- and
- a medical tool configured to be removably coupled with the shaft.
