Polymer emulsion as a liquid embolic system

Abstract

Liquid embolic compositions, systems, and methods for occluding a treatment site are provided. In some embodiments, the liquid embolic composition comprises a biocompatible polymer, and water; wherein the biocompatible polymer comprises a hydrophobic polymer and a polar head group, and wherein the liquid embolic composition is an emulsion comprising particles of the biocompatible polymer suspended in the water, and wherein the liquid embolic composition forms a solid when in contact with an ionic solution. The liquid embolic composition may further comprise an imaging agent. The liquid embolic composition disclosed herein is for use in a neurovascular or peripheral embolization procedure such as middle meningeal artery embolization, arteriovenous malformation embolization, arteriovenous fistula embolization, and tumor embolization.
