Mobile Hybrid Radio Receiver Service Following Source Selection

A method comprising:

• at a hybrid radio receiver configured to recover audio separately from audio sources that include a broadcast radio signal and a wireless network connection:
• selecting the broadcast radio signal as a source for output audio;
• based on a reception metric that indicates quality of the audio in the broadcast radio signal, deriving switching decisions periodically that each indicate to select one of the audio sources as the source for the output audio;
• while the broadcast radio signal is selected as the source for audio output, upon detecting, in the switching decisions, a first change to select the wireless network connection instead of the broadcast radio signal, first validating the first change over a first hold time based on first subsequent switching decisions that occur during the first hold time;
• and
• upon first successfully validating the first change, switching to selecting the wireless network connection as the source for the output audio.

A hybrid radio comprising:

• receivers to recover audio separately from audio sources including a broadcast radio signal and a wireless network connection, and to derive a reception metric that indicates a quality of the audio from the broadcast radio signal;
• a selector to select between the audio sources for a source of output audio;
• and
• a controller to perform:
• commanding the selector to select a first audio source of the audio sources as the source for the output audio, and not select a second audio source of the audio sources;
• based on the reception metric, deriving switching decisions periodically that each indicate to select one of the audio sources for the source of the output audio;
• while the first audio source is selected, upon detecting, in the switching decisions, a change to select the second audio source instead of the first audio source, starting a hold time and validating the change over the hold time based on subsequent switching decisions that occur during the hold time;
• and
• upon successfully validating the change over the hold time, commanding the selector to select the second audio source as the source for the output audio instead of the first audio source.
