Abstract
An improved surge protection device is provided that includes a detection unit configured to generate a detection signal indicating the occurrence of an energy rich pulse caused by an electrical surge in an electrical power system. The device further includes a bypass unit with a bypass path that, in response to the detection signal, temporarily diverts the pulse. An absorption unit is arranged to arrest the pulse after it has been routed through the bypass unit, thereby protecting the electrical power system from the effects of the electrical surge.
Claims20
A surge protection device for arresting an electrical surge occurring in an electrical power system with at least a first and a second power line to supply electric power, the surge protection device comprising:
- a detection unit connectable to the first and/or second power line and configured to generate a detection signal indicative of an occurrence of an energy rich pulse in the power system caused by the electrical surge;
- a bypass unit having a first bypass terminal connectable to the first or the second power line, a second bypass terminal connected to the first bypass terminal via an electrical bypass path, and a trigger terminal configured to receive the detection signal generated by the detection unit, the electrical bypass path switchable from an electrically blocking state to an electrically conducting state in response to the detection signal;
- and
- an absorption unit having a first absorption terminal connectable to the second bypass terminal of the bypass unit, the absorption unit configured to arrest the electrical surge in case the bypass path is in conducting state.
An arrangement comprising:
- a surge protection device to arrest electrical surges in an electrical power system with at least a first and a second power line to supply electric power, and an electrical load, the electrical load configured to be electrically supplied via the first and second power line of the electrical power system, the surge protection device comprising:
- a detection unit connectable to the first and/or second power line and configured to generate a detection signal indicative of an occurrence of an energy rich pulse in the power system caused by the electrical surge;
- a bypass unit having a first bypass terminal connectable to the first or the second power line, a second bypass terminal connected to the first bypass terminal via an electrical bypass path, and a trigger terminal configured to receive the detection signal generated by the detection unit, the electrical bypass path switchable from an electrically blocking state to an electrically conducting state in response to the detection signal;
- and
- an absorption unit having a first absorption terminal connectable to the second bypass terminal of the bypass unit, the absorption unit configured to arrest the electrical surge in case the bypass path is in conducting state.
A method for arresting an electrical surge occurring in an electrical power system with at least a first and a second power line to supply electric power, the method comprising:
- generating, utilizing a detection unit, a detection signal indicative of an occurrence of an energy rich pulse in the power system caused by the electrical surge;
- providing a bypass unit with a first bypass terminal connected to the first or the second power line, a second bypass terminal connected to the first bypass terminal via an electrical bypass path, and a trigger terminal that receives the detection signal generated by the detection unit;
- in response to the detection signal, switching the electrical bypass path from an electrically blocking state to an electrically conducting state;
- and
- utilizing an absorption unit connected to the second bypass terminal of the bypass unit, arresting the electrical surge in case the bypass unit is in conducting state.
