Abstract

A battery module capable for delaying thermal propagation to adjacent battery cells by controlling the direction of gas and flame emitted from a battery cell. The battery module includes a cell stack including a plurality of battery cells and at least one physical member. An intumescent fire protection member is provided on a surface of at least one physical member closest to and facing the cell stack. The intumescent fire protection member is a coating layer formed integrally with the at least one physical member by applying an intumescent fire protection material. The intumescent fire protection member is configured to expand into a space between adjacent battery cells of the plurality of battery cells, when one of the adjacent battery cells generates heat, thereby isolating the adjacent battery cells from each other.
