Abstract

A battery module according to the present disclosure may include: a cell assembly having a plurality of battery cells that are stacked; a module case accommodating the cell assembly in an internal space thereof and having a venting hole; and a cover member including a plurality of refractory layers each having a discharge slit formed and coupled to an outer surface of the module case, wherein the venting hole and the plurality of discharge slits communicate with each other, wherein when the discharge slit of one of the refractory layers may be ruptured, and the discharge slit in an adjacent refractory layer is subsequently opened by the rupture of the one of the refractory layers, the discharge slits of the one of the refractory layers and the adjacent refractory layer are configured to selectively open in one direction from the inside of the module case to the outside.
