Systems, methods and apparatus for providing interactive online reading experiences

Abstract

Providing viewers/readers of primary digital content on a displayed page of a digital publisher's website or app with a variety of additional and context-relevant secondary digital content, based at least in part on one or more keywords, phrases and/or topics identified in or extracted from the primary digital content. One or more of machine learning, artificial intelligence (e.g., large language models) or semantic matching techniques are employed to identify and/or extract keywords, phrases and/or particular topics of relevance in text provided by a digital publisher via a website or an app. Based at least in part on such keywords, phrases and/or topics in the primary digital content, one or more sources of secondary digital content (e.g., relating to the identified keywords, phrases and/or particular topics) are then identified. Secondary digital content is retrieved from the source(s) and provided together with the primary digital content in an updated page displayed on a viewer/reader's display device (e.g., in the context of the digital publisher's website or app). In some implementations, the source(s) of secondary digital content and/or the secondary digital content itself may be selected based, at least in part, on a geographic location of the viewer/reader's display device (e.g., a mobile computing device or laptop/desktop computer). The secondary digital content may be provided “live” in essentially real time with low latency and synchronously amongst significant numbers of viewers/readers via socket-based connections between a given viewer client device and one or more socket servers from which the secondary digital content is transmitted.
